Azaleas

All Azaleas are Rhododendrons but not all Rhododendrons are Azaleas! Why?  Back in 1753, the Swedish botanist Linnaeus established the genus Rhododendron.  He also, at the same time, created the genus Azalea.  But in the 19th century, George Don, another botanist, discovered there was very little botanical difference between the two, and they were both classified as the genus Rhododendron.  Gardeners prefer to talk of Rhododendron and Azaleas as separate kinds of plants, and that's how you'll find them in nurseries and catalogs.

The word "rhododendron" is derived from the Greek words rhodon ("rose") and dendron ("tree")
